Zen Shiatsu is generally carried out on a futon on the floor, the Earth being considered an integral part of the therapy in providing grounding and support. Shiatsu can be done on a massage table which you may prefer, especially if you have back pain. It is recommended to only eat a light meal an hour before a treatment. The first appointment takes slightly longer to allow time to discuss and take notes about any health problems and medical history.
Zen Shiatsu combines stretches, joint rotations and gentle pressure to stimulate, sedate, and unblock disrupted energy. Zen Shiatsu also stimulates the circulatory, lymphatic, hormonal, neuromuscular, musculo-skeletal, respiratory, digestive and autonomic nervous systems.
What do I need to wear?
You remain fully clothed. You should wear loose fitting clothing, preferably with long sleeves such as a track suit or leggings (cotton is best) and socks. Avoid wearing a skirt or jeans.
What about confidentiality?
When working with a client, their anonymity is always preserved. It is a requirement of professional shiatsu practice that notes are kept of our sessions.
How will I feel after the session?
After the session, you will leave feeling relaxed and refreshed, more at ease with your body and grounded. You may be given simple stretching and breathing exercises to help you maintain relaxation and good health outside the sessions.
How many sessions do I need?
That’s really up to you. If you are looking to make significant progress, then more often is better, especially in the beginning. Received on a regular basis, Zen Shiatsu is very effective at preventing disease by addressing imbalances before they manifest as illnesses, strengthening the immune system and allowing the body to shift into balance and address the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.
What if I am on medication?
Shiatsu will not interfere with your medication. It will often complement conventional medical treatment by giving an overall strengthening effect and improving the circulation of blood and lymph and reducing stress. If you are receiving medical treatment for a particular condition, then it may be advisable to inform or consult your doctor prior to having a Shiatsu treatment.
Can I have Shiatsu if I am having other complementary or alternative therapy?
Yes, although it is generally best to leave at least a few days between different treatments as it could interfere with the healing process. If you are having other therapies and are unsure, please discuss them with your practitioner.
How much do you charge?
£45 for the first session and £40 for follow-ups
Payment is by cash or cheque at the time of treatment.
